My wife and I spent an enjoyable day in Manchester, Vt visiting Hildene and following that up with a spectacular meal at Chanticleer. My wife had a chicken selection and I had the roast duckling. Both were excellent choices. The ambience, food and service were fantastic. I last ate there about 25 years ago and remember that way back then the meal was marvelous.

Did not have a reservation but they accommodated us anyway. We tried the following: Appetizers: lobster ravioli - there were only 2 on the plate. Hubby liked it I was not impressed French onion soup - some of the best I've had Escargot- first one I tried was gritty, sauce was excellent though Main Lamb chops - medium as requested but fatty and overwhelming with mustard seed the vegetables were an afterthought clearly as was the bland mash though nicely presented The filet mignon stole the show. Best thing I ate all night.

Chantecleer, a place to visit again and again. Nestled in the mountain and valleys of the peaceable Green Mountains. After beholding the beauty, and taking in the praise of the scenery on the drive over, why not pull off the main road and try this delectable place? If you don't you will be asking yourself "What did I miss?" Sometimes, restaurant moments are right, and there is no need to explain. This was the place. And, what afforded service. Here's a former barn turned into a chateau exuding warmth and charm. Ample parking to this unfolding welcoming mood lit, an earthy place awaits. I was the guest of a host of great international distinction. And, this was my first appearance at the Chantecleer. The Dover Sole and European salad were recommended by said host, and I followed careful guidance. Had Chinatown come to Manchester? Beginning course, the Wontons. Embarrassed that I had expected them to be "meh", instead, they were a very good starter. Very attentive staff. Intimate dinning. Reservations a must. We dinned at 6 pm. By 7 pm the restaurant was completely full. Rejoicing for exceeding service in a peaceful dreamy setting. Revealed grace in humble fashion. Come early, stay late. Wow. Wow. Wow.

Perfect meal from start to finish, which is hard to come by these days. All of the meals come with fresh warm rolls and a salad of lightly dressed fresh greens. For an appetizer I got the French onion soup. It was made exactly how it should be. Definitely in my top 3. For dinner I wanted to try something different so I ordered the Veal Scaloppini Schnitzel Style. The veal cutlets were cooked perfectly and were "melt in your mouth" tender. The spaetzel was an excellent accompaniment. For dessert I got the carrot cake. Moist, flavorful and enjoyable. The restaurant was quiet and romantic. Prices weren't as outrageous and others have suggested. If you want a quality meal and good service it is gonna cost a little more. One of the top restaurants in the area. I'm guessing the only reason there aren't more reviews on Yelp because it is more of an older crowd.

Beautiful meal, every time. I've been coming here for years, and I'm always excited to return. The ambiance is farmhouse cozy, especially in the winter with a roaring fire. The waitstaff is superb--their table-side work, from the Caesar salad to the Dover Sole, is well practiced and results in a delicious dish. I've tend to get the duck, and it's always a treat. Drinks to desert, Chantecleer is a favorite in the restaurant circuit for the area, and certainly worth every cent for a fantastic evening of French inspired cuisine with traditional Vermont styling.

The best rack of lamb I've ever had - hands down. The decor and service are excellent as well. If you want at least one fabulous dinner when staying in Manchester, this is definitely the place. Worth every penny.

We spent 5 nights in town and this was the best meal we had in the area hands down, in a nice atmosphere and friendly wait staff. The lamb - a favorite of mine in general - was the best I've ever had. Would highly recommend. My wife had the parmesan crusted Halibut and loved it. Desserts were also outstanding - we had the Matterhorn and the caramelized banana one and loved both. The table next to us got the Caesar salad where they make the salad and dressing next to the table - looked amazing. Crowd was mix of older and younger folks, no kids. Can't wait to go back!

Chantecleer does not disappoint. Chef Michel, Melanie and all the staff make sure you feel welcome every time. The meals are always creative, beautifully presented and done to perfection. This time, I enjoyed the escargot, and Chef's Halibut, Swordfish and Shrimp Stew, seasoned with curry and served with rice. Dessert was an apple and pear crisp with ice cream.

The food here was incredible. It was very pricey, though so prepare to open your wallet. I did enjoy the pre fix menu though that had a list of appetizers, entrees, and dessert for $35. It was a very charming restaurant and I would recommend it if you are in the area. Get the prime rib and the caramelized bananas!

We visit Manchester every year, and this is our FAVORITE restaurant! Our parents have been going to Manchester for 42 years and they have their must-visit restaurants, but now, we have even turned them into huge fans of Chantecleer. The only downside is that it is pricey, but we've never had anything bad here.

Have been to this restaurant about 50 times over the years. It is nothing short of wonderful.Prior review talking about the "over 70's " crowd just shows that reviewer's lack of judgement. We are not over 70 and started coming here in our 40's.Food is always consistent and always excellent.Coming from NY/NJ area I think we know great restaurants and this is certainly one of them.TheDover Sole we had the other night was fantastic, as was my wife's Rack of Lamb. The French Onion Soup is a meal in itself. Those of us who know this restaurant cannot understand how Yelp rates this number 8 in Dorset. It is probably in the top three in the whole state !!!

Not exactly French as there are Italian choices on the menu. None the less, an excellent restaurant. Even for world travelers with gastronomic sophistication it would not disappoint. The crab cakes and duck were phenomenal. Definitely going back next time in town.

After recommendations from friends, we finally dined at The Chantecleer this past weekend. The quaint "barn"decor, in my opinion needs up-dating with much less clutter and the effect would be even more charming. The place had a lively crowd, not loud (good) and a decent bar without TV (better). The "special European" salad included a bed of greens with several mini tastings on top was very good. We ordered the filet mignon and the halibut special as entrees. Both dishes were excellent. The beef with it's wine pan sauce of bacon and fruit was excellent and just the right portion size. The fish (with lobster risotto) was fantastic. We had the fresh berries with pistachio ice cream for dessert...yummy After visiting most of the "better restaurants" in the Manchester / Dorset area over the last 10 years, I believe that The Chantecleer, in terms of food and service, is clearly one of the best.

We have been going to the Chanticleer for our special, memorable occasions for well over 20 years. This is an incredible restaurant! The food is excellent. The staff is friendly and attentive and the ambiance is that of a cozy French Country Inn with more than a touch of Vermont added. My family, friends and I have NEVER been disappointed here by any aspect of the dining experience. Though a bit too pricy for an every week dining out experience, the price is WELL worth it for those special occasions when you want to commemorate and enjoy a well prepared, delicious meal with friends or family. The Chanticleer will continue to be the place where we celebrate the best of life, food and friends.

8/09/09 Had a great meal at the Chantecleer yesterday. Yes, it is expensive but the dinner was plentiful and delicious. I had the Sea Bass with dumplings and veg and my wife had the veal, both dishes were great. Service was great. I can recommend this restaurant. This restaurant is close to Manchester, Vermont.

Charming spot and ordered the Dover sole, to be filleted table-side. Dinner arrived and my waitress did her best to fillet the fish but it wasn't cooked. She whisked the fish away, and returned with the fish filleted and plated quite some time after other entrees were served. Though she offered apologies from the chef, I fully expected the most expensive dish on the menu ($45) to be expertly prepared as offered on the menu. Salad was delicious and would go back to try a different entree.

Not what it used to be. Had been many times in the past and the meals are not up to the previous wonderfulness. Still a great dinning room and great wait staff.
